{"id":569,"date":"2008-12-10T07:27:26","date_gmt":"2008-12-10T12:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/php.astolfo.com\/?p=569"},"modified":"2014-12-21T06:32:35","modified_gmt":"2014-12-21T11:32:35","slug":"ropeclimber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.plastibots.com\/index.php\/2008\/12\/10\/ropeclimber\/","title":{"rendered":"RopeClimber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rope Climber has been built for the rtlToronto Lego Robotics Event &#8211; Rope Climbing.\u00a0 In a nutshell &#8211; build a robot that can find and climb a rope.\u00a0<a href=\"\/image\/roper\/roper2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0pt none;\" src=\"\/image\/roper\/roper2.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a> Sounds easy right?\u00a0 Not!\u00a0 In the tradition of rtlToronto, there are some interesting rules to make this more challenging.\u00a0 First off &#8211; the robot must fit within a 8x8x8 square on start.\u00a0 The trick &#8211; the rope is hanging 12 inches off the ground.\u00a0 The robot must &#8220;grow&#8221; to catch the rope.\u00a0 The robot must also start 36 inches from the rope.\u00a0 This requires it to be able to drive and find the rope.\u00a0 The 8 inch requirement also is important to consider once the robot reaches the top.\u00a0 In order to win, the robot must be above a marker placed on the rope.\u00a0 This marker will be 12 inches from the top.\u00a0 This robot extends to 14 inches, so it must also &#8220;contract&#8221; when it detects it is at the top.<br \/>\n <!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"\/image\/roper\/competition_sketch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"477\" \/><span><br \/>\n (sketch courtesy of Calum Tsang &#8211; rtlToronto)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here is my take.  In order to make a winning robot, the following must be considered:<br \/>\n :: speed &#8211; it must be able to drive to, find and climb the rope the fastest to win.<br \/>\n :: grip &#8211; to climb effectively, the robot must have good grip on the rope.<br \/>\n :: weight &#8211;
